Alert: Yellow Warning issued in Parts of Scotland

A yellow warning has been issued in Scotland in anticipation of thunderstorms with predicted rainfall and hail.

Scots are being advised to prepare for thunderstorms today as turbulent weather persists. The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow alert for thunderstorms on Saturday, covering the southern half of Scotland and parts of northern England starting from 11am. Rainfall amounts could potentially reach up to 40mm within just a few hours in the affected areas.

Meteorologists are forecasting slow-moving thunderstorms in localized areas, with possible occurrences of hail, lightning, and intense rainfall. Some of these storms may deposit as much as 20mm of rain in under an hour. The alert is slated to remain active until 11pm tonight, encompassing regions such as Strathclyde, southwestern Scotland, Borders, Tayside, and Fife.

Aidan McGivern, a meteorologist with the Met Office, has emphasized the likelihood of intermittent showers and persistent rainfall due to a low-pressure system centered over northern parts of the country. He has urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, as spray could result in longer journey times. Concerns include the potential for localized flooding, power disruptions, and even structural damage from lightning strikes.

While the current warning is set to expire tonight, McGivern anticipates wet conditions lingering overnight, particularly as rain gradually moves southward. Looking ahead to Sunday, initial showers may persist in southern regions but are expected to clear gradually throughout the day, although northern Scotland may still experience scattered showers.
